Scatterbrain attempts to bring the title’s definition to life.
The opening phrases are naturally scattered, representing seemingly random thoughts dashing through a brain. They all share similar elements but are each unique in rhythm, timbre, and orchestration. A vague sense of confusion echoes throughout the first minute as the audience tries to find a musical pulse and mode. The second section is much more somber with drawn-out harmonies that chromatically melt into each other. Dissonant textures underneath an active melody portray the sense of overwhelm that comes with a scattered mindset. The final segment in its furious nature utilizes dynamic contrast and various forms of melodies already presented to propel the momentum forward. This mood mimics the frustration that comes when too many ideas in one’s head cloud any sense of order. The piece becomes more and more hectic until a triumphant final chord, representing the satisfaction of peace of mind.
